Breast Cancer Testing and Prophylactic Mastectomy
Information about breast cancer testing related to the BREA gene has been added to the Consumer Guide to Plastic Surgery. Studies show that altered copies of the BREA 1 or 2 gene increase a woman’s chances of getting breast and/or ovarian cancer. Approximately 0.1 to 0.2 percent of the population carry this mutation. Data shows that prophylactic mastectomy, removal of one or two of the breasts, can reduce the cancer rate in patients who carry the mutated gene by 90%. The website contains a wide range of information about plastic surgery and skin care, including articles related to BOTOX injections, Dysport and breast implants complications. The sister website provides information about other types of cancer, such as mesothelioma cancer.
